Qualification requirements:
To qualify for a Scholarship, candidates must:

  1. Attain a minimum age of 18 by February 1 in the scholarship commencement year.
  2. Hold citizenship in a participating country (listed on the Australia Awards website) and apply for the scholarship from their country of citizenship.
  3. Not be an Australian citizen, possess permanent residency in Australia, or seek a visa for permanent residence in Australia.
  4. Not be married, engaged, or in a de facto relationship with an individual holding, or eligible for, Australian or New Zealand citizenship or permanent residency, throughout the application, selection, or mobilization phases (note: residents of Cook Islands, Niue, and Tokelau with New Zealand citizenship are eligible but must apply for a Student visa [subclass 500]).
  5. Not serve as current military personnel.
  6. Not have previously received a long-term Australia Award unless they have resided outside Australia for twice the duration of their stay in Australia (e.g., a previous awardee who spent four years on an Australia Awards Scholarship in Australia must reside outside Australia for eight years before applying for another Australia Awards Scholarship).
  7. Have no convictions for criminal activities (including in their home country), including those related to Child Protection and PSEAH.
  8. Graduates under the Pacific Secondary School Scholarship Program (PSSSP) who finished their secondary education in Australia in the preceding year are eligible to apply for a long-term Australia Award.
  9. Satisfy any specific criteria set by the Program Area or the government of the applicant’s country of citizenship (e.g., having worked a certain number of years in an appropriate sector).
  10. Meet the admission requirements of the institution where the award is to be pursued (this might necessitate withdrawal of an award offer by Program Areas if the recipient cannot satisfy the institution’s admission standards, which may only be determined when Program Areas seek placement at selected institutions).
  11. Satisfy all requirements of the Department of Home Affairs to hold a Student Visa. Failure to do so may lead to withdrawal of an award offer by the Program Area.
  12. Not apply for a scholarship for a course of study at a lower academic level than already attained (e.g., applying for a Master’s scholarship when possessing a PhD).
  13. Candidates must disclose any connection or relationship to staff employed at Program Areas (including locally engaged staff at post) or managing contractors for transparent and proper application management.
Consult the Australia Awards Policy Handbook (PDF) for comprehensive eligibility criteria.
